Breakfast for Dinner: Appreciating the people working the late night shift.

“I’m sleep.”

Breakfast for Dinner is a publication dedicated to telling the stories of night shift workers. Our team created a flexible and robust typographic system that can exist in both print and digital form. Our first interviewee was Olympia Saunders, a janitorial staff member working on the CMU University’s campus.

Olympia was one of the first friendly faces our group met when we were freshmen just entering college. We wanted to interview her to learn more about her as a person, and hopefully turn this publication into a gift to show our appreciation and respect for the work she does for us.

We wanted our publication to read like how Olympia speaks. The way she gasps, how she goes off on tangents, and the transitions between different topics are all reflected in the way we type set and treat the relationship between text and image.

As the reader flips through the page, we want them to engage in a color story: from night time, dream state, to early morning. Our illustrations and dissolved textures help the page feel intimate and soft, especially as Olympia talks about her dream of going to Paris one day.

What I struggled with in this project was solidifying a visual style and brand that reflected the authenticity that Olympia brought to our interview. Through many iterations and experiments, our team was able to find a consistent and cohesive translation of Olympia’s story in both print and digital.
