Events Design

team Heather Hale, Creative Director

Brex is a B2B fintech startup based in San Francisco that offers a variety of agentic finance tools to their customers such as generating receipts

I worked closely with my creative director Heather on in-person events branding, whether it was for Brex’s own industry event Brex Mode or for tradeshow conferences across the US. The visuals and copy of these event assets were designed to target specific audiences such as accountants, CFOs, or even procurement managers who use Brex’s platform for their daily tasks.

Designing for Production
Working on events at Brex allowed me to work at a scale I haven’t done before. This experience trained me to understand how the designs I created on Figma will be realized in real life by diving into technical illustrator files with precise measurements and using image generation tools to mockup graphics in real event spaces.Brex has 100+ events a year, so many of my projects operated on tight turnarounds and last minute adjustments. I built a good relationship with the field marketing team and communicated effectively with vendors to make sure all proofs were precise translations of the original designs.

Landing pages, social posts,
paper ephemera, and more.
Outside of designing on a large scale, I supported the team in building the rest of the digital and physical ecosystem revolving a Brex event. I created digital assets like speaker announcement cards for socials, post cards that promoted future Brex events, and even fake receipts that were used in a flying receipt machine to attract potential customers to the Brex tradeshow booths.

TakeawaysAlways construct a throughline with booth messaging.

A booth comes with many brandable surfaces, and one of my first lessons was to make sure that the surfaces not only had consistent graphics and colors, but the copy on each surface must directly support each other. Finalizing the copy will then dictate the rest of the design decisions and determine where to place the sponsor logos, value propositions, a huge logo moment etc.

Events design calls for thinking outside of the usual brand box.

Working on events challenged me to think outside what is immediately obvious for the Brex brand. I initially struggled with understanding what brand rules to break and which to follow, which lead to some difficult feedback sessions with my creative leads. In the future, I would love to do even more explorations and push what is possible so that customers can see the brand reinvent itself and be pleasantly delighted the next time they attend an in-person experience.
